Brief Over view on Collecting AMC Literature

Since people either have not realized or don't under stand the system of literature production. I'm going lay out some general information that does not seem to be commonly known or understood. Please note there a good number of exceptions , so these are guide lines rather then hard rules. The full line literature usually has a Fall introduction for the new year of cars and a spring/Chicago auto show edition that including what ever new mid-year models or changes AMC came out with. What ever new model AMC had was usually introduced at the Chicago auto, being as it was the closest big Auto show to Kenosha and at this time the Detroit auto show did not amount to any thing. The AMX, Sc/Rambler ,Rebel Machine and Pacer were all introduced mid year in Chicago, etc, etc. ON mid- year new car introduction , each new model generally was included in the full line mid-year literature and usually got it own special piece of literature. Making a least two different full literature pieces for each year. Just one example when the 1968 AMX was introduced a special booklet piece of literature called "The AMX story" was printed. There are two versions of this piece of literature, one with word genteel misspelled as gentile and the correct version. AMC was afraid some people would be offended by the misspelling and pulled the gentile version. There are mistake version another example is the 1962 fall introduce piece. Between the time the literature was printed and the new Ambassador was produced some had decided to move the V-8 badge from the front fender to the rear quarter panels on the production cars. So there is two versions of the first full line 1962 literature. One right and one wrong as to where the V-8 badge is. The other thing is almost of the AMC literature is dated.
For example the 1962 full line literature posted here recently posted here has a number on it 1962 - 1001 for the first 1962 introduction literature , along with litho is USA. The dating is fairly consistent in the 50's and 60's by the late 70's and early 80's it gone from 1962 to 62 to 2 usually with a job number following the 2. The dating is usually on the last 2 or 3 pages of the literature, usually the next to last. If it's printed in the  USA for Canada it will note Canada. If it's printed in the USA for Military or English or European export it will note this also. Canada also printed it's own AMC literature and if it was noted printed in the US more then likely it is completely different from what was used in the USA. Canadian literature was oft done in English and French for Quebec and there are even complete French only version for Quebec. European export literature was print in English / French and German as a general rule was there fore greatly different then USA literature.  The Mexican VAM literature was printed in Mexico in Spanish only and differs greatly from USA versions for the same year. Same thing for Australia they printed there own, completely different
then what the USA had. I only had one piece of literature from South Africa for 1969 American and can't really draw much of a conclusion from that other then in South Africa AMC was hooked up with Toyota like AMI (Australian Motor Industries) was with Toyota in Australia. I have no AMC literature in Arabic from Saudi Arabia , but I did meet an AMC dealer from Saudi Arabia at Kenosha 2002. I also do not have any literature in Hindi from Mahindra & Mahindra who were the Jeep manufacturer in India, as they made the CJ-3 and the Forward Control Jeeps for years. Mahindra imports there farm tractors now and will begin importing there Cars and 4WDs some time in the next year or two. There were/are Jeep India and as far as I know AMC never sold cars only Jeeps in India.

One last note on press kits. These general follow the same pattern as the full line literature with a fall introduction kit with photos and press info on the new models followed by a full mid-year press kit around the time of the Chicago auto show. Here again for any new thing, a new 5 speed transmission , or a new engine or model there usually was a new press kit for it. I managed to get on AMCs press kit list some time in the late 70's until the Chrysler buy in 1987 when I was kicked off. The earlier stuff I had to buy just like every buddy else. Good luck looking for this stuff I'm to point I don't find much I have not already got. I'm missing a few Nash pieces from the 20's and early 30's. The stuff that is  really expensive. Any pre World War I stuff rarely shows up at any price. Good Hunting. LRDaum

Nice write-up.  I think the best piece I have on hand is the '84 Eagle Brochure listing the SX/4 as still being available.  Did AMC do many reprints throughout some model years to replenish dealer supplies.  Knowing how frugal they could be I had wondered about that?

Outstanding look at the scene, Larry.

Yes, I have the 1970 mid-year Gremlin brochure, as the Gremlin was not featured in the most common piece(at least nowadays), "The '70s from AMC".  That one has the front view sliced and joined into several different cars.  But there are several other editions, and more than one Gremlin brochure as well.

This type of not-commonly-known information is the whole reason for The AMC Heritage Forum.  Where else are you going to find out stuff like this?

Thanks a bundle, mramc...  Wink

I have a 1971 full line brochure (black cover) which contains two errors. The Hornet door panel badge is shown installed upside down, and on the back cover the AMC A-mark logo was printed backwards, and is covered by a silver square.
