From DragList.com: The "Gremlin X" of Wally Booth was sold in 1973. Jesse Childree and Max Smith bought the little car to race in the Southeast. The pair shared driving chores over the next couple of years. They raced the Gremlin in Division 2 races and Dixie Pro Stock races for the most part. Jesse Childree later converted the car into a Super Gasser in the early 1980s.

As an interesting side note, I read once that this car had a tendency to blow out the back window at 170 mph, so it had some sort of fancypants special structure on the back glass area to keep that from happening.

Hi. Matt here. I think I saw it at The Woodward Dream Cruise a year or too ago. There was a roped off AMC section there, and I think the Maskin and Kanners Hornet X was there too. I am not sure. My dad still might have some pics. I will check and get back here. -Matt.

Wally Booth was the first racer to break into 8s in Pro Stock with this car.  The reason he sold it was to go with the freshly introduced Hornet Hatchback for better aerodynamics.  With the Hornet X, he became the first racer in Pro Stock to break into the 7 second range...

The Smitch's (German for Smith SP?) have both Wally Booth's Hornet and one of his Gremlin race cars in appropriately in Kenosha , Wisconsin.  They also have an Amos Johnson Gremlin IMSA car. They are to be at the AMO meet in the St. Louis area in couple weeks. Yes, there is more then one Gremlin and Hornet I'm given to understand that Booth had.

I'm guessing the answer is yes, but somebody out there might actually know the answer, and why it was done like that.  Might just be to emphasize the different body shape or something.  Maybe not.

Scott, way to go!  With all the other drag racing stuff we've got, we just can't go without some decent pics of Booth's rigs.

Is there possibly any stock body AMC that looks badder than a Pro Stock Hornet or Gremlin?  These cars make the SS/AMX look like a grocery getter...  maybe the Bill Kraft Marlin, but that's about it for stock bodied cars.  I'd love to see one of these resurrected as a Top Sportsman or Pro Modified rig.
